In New York State, there isn’t a specific permit required to become a substitute teacher, and a teaching certificate is not mandatory.
However, holding a certificate does come with benefits.
If you're actively pursuing certification—completing at least six semester hours annually—you can teach in any capacity and for an unlimited number of days.
To become a substitute teacher in New York, you’ll need:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
A fingerprint-based background check (FBI/DOJ)
Proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
For more details on how to earn your full-time teaching certification, check with the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
